In the south of Iwate Prefecture, "mochi culture" has been a part of ceremonies, agricultural rituals, and seasonal events for many, many years, and it's a tradition that continues today. There is an abundance of variety, with some 300 different mochi recipes using anything from anko sweet bean paste to jyune (deulkkae seeds), fresh-water shrimps to rice cake soup, "zunda" mochi covered in crushed soybeans, and "fusube" mochi with chili peppers. In the south of the prefecture there are many stores offering mochi specialties so that you can enjoy these delights all year round.
