Located in the steamy thermal town of Beppu, Hyotan Onsen is the only three-star Michelin hot spring in Japan. Founded in 1922, the facility was renovated in 2019 and now boasts wide-ranging baths for a truly indulgent experience. The all-natural hot spring features a unique bamboo cooling system to control the water temperature and keep bathers comfortable.
Hyotan Onsen - literally ‘gourd hot spring’ – was so-named due to the shape of its original indoor bath. It was modelled in stone to replicate the squash-like fruit and emblem of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the samurai leader renowned for unifying Japan in the 16th century.
These days, stressed visitors can ease their worries in indoor and outdoor baths sculpted from rock, cypress, pebbles, and granite, or let cascading water massage and mellow out tense and tired muscles in the waterfall bath. For a little pampering, why not unwind in the steam bath; said to rejuvenate and moisten skin? The sand bath is another must-try—don a yukata and bury yourself in the heated grains, relaxing as they gently warm your body.
Those visiting with families, friends, or partners may like to book one of 14 different private baths with en-suite saunas. Post-soak, cook your own food using thermal steam in a process known as jigoku mushi, literally meaning ‘hell steaming’. Choose from a range of fresh seafood, meat, tofu, and vegetables, pop your selection into the suspended pot and let Mother Nature do the rest. With so many ways to relax and replenish, whiling away an afternoon or day at Hyotan Onsen is recommended, before reemerging to discover the numerous other charms awaiting in Oita Prefecture.
