Originating in Tokushima Prefecture and with over 400 years of history, Awa Odori is Japan’s world famous summer dance. Every year between August 12 and 15, well over a million visitors from around the world descend upon Tokushima to experience the Awa Odori Festival, one of the largest and most spectacular in Japan. To celebrate the tradition and enchantment of this summer dance, Awa Odori Museum was opened in 1999. The museum features explanations on the origins of Awa Odori and exhibitions displaying the costumes and musical instruments used. Not to be missed are the daily afternoon and evening performances of Awa Odori given by the museum’s troupe. A variety of dances provide viewing pleasure, and in the finale, visitors can even get up on stage and join in.
